Conference Overview The 7th Annual Network of Ontario Pediatric Diabetes Programs Professional Development Day and Networking Session was held on November 30 and December 1, 2007 at the Novotel Toronto Mississauga Hotel in Mississauga, Ontario. |

This year's event, hosted by the Northern Diabetes Health Network, brought together about 200 healthcare professionals from Ontario and other provinces. This was a key opportunity to meet and network with experts in the field of pediatric diabetes. Participants acquired up-to-date evidence-based knowledge, innovative strategies for clinical practice and new ideas to improve diabetes care for children.
The Professional Development Day featured the following speakers and topics:
Barbara Anderson, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist, Professor of Pediatrics Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, Texas, presented "Family-Based Interventions in Pediatric Diabetes Management".
Margaret Bellefountaine, BSHec, MSA, RD, CDE, Manager Diabetes Health Thunder Bay and Jennifer Buccino, MEd, RD, CDE, Manager Clinical Dietitian The Hospital for Sick Children, Toronto, Ontario, debated "Carbohydrate Counting for Young Children with Type 1 Diabetes: Is It the Best Approach?"
Susana Patton,
Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Communicable
Diseases C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital/University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan,
presented "Feeding Challenges and Behaviours in Young
Children with Type 1 Diabetes".
Dr. Darrell Wilson, Professor and Chief, Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetes Stanford University and the Lucile Packard Children's Hospital, Stanford, California, presented "New Technology in Diabetes".
Elaine Leclerc, HCS Training & Consulting, Douglas Harbour, New Brunswick, presented "Understanding Generational Learning Differences".
