Conference Overview

The Network of Northern Ontario Diabetes Programs "Networking Meeting & Professional Development Day" was held on June 1st and 2nd, 2007 at the Valhalla Inn in Thunder Bay, Ontario

 


Diabetes educators from 39 northern Ontario NDHN member programs gathered to network, discuss emerging trends in diabetes, learn from experts in the field and hear about best practices and cutting edge research.



 

This year's Professional Development Day “Diabetes Care: Strategies for Progress” featured the following speakers and topics:

 

Dr. Baiju R. Shah, Scientist at Institute for Clinical Evaluative Studies, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto and Endocrinologist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, presented ICES latest data regarding the prevalence and incidence of diabetes in northern Ontario as well as access to services.

 

Patrick McGowan, Ph.D., Associate Professor, University of Victoria

Centre on Aging in Victoria, British Columbia, presented the self-management program and conducted a workshop with healthcare providers.

 

Elaine Leclerc, President, HCS Training & Consulting in Douglas Harbour, New Brunswick, presented generational theory and its implications for learning efficiency.

 

Dr. Stewart Harris, Professor, University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario, presented "The Changing Landscape in the Approaches to Glucose Control in Type 2 Diabetes".

 

Jody Urquhart, Inspirational speaker, I Do Inspire, Calgary, Alberta, ended the day with her humorous and heart-warming presentation "The Nerve to Serve… Say Hello to Humor & Goodbye to Burnout!"
