Aboriginal Initiative In 2006, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care asked the NDHN to implement the Northern Ontario Aboriginal Diabetes Initiative (NOADI). The first step was to conduct a comprehensive assessment of diabetes-related needs of Aboriginal people living in northern Ontario. This initial task was carried out in the summer of 2006 with a request for input going out to 248 Aboriginal community/organization stakeholders. The “Aboriginal Diabetes Education and Management Needs Assessment for Northern Ontario 2006” was submitted to the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care in the Fall of 2006.

Five key themes that reflected the diabetes priorities identified by Aboriginal communities and organizations emerged from the findings of the Needs Assessment. As a result, these themes were used by the NDHN as criteria to approve funding for diabetes initiatives. |
